From the coauthor of the New York Times bestselling Illuminae Files comes the first book in a new series that’s part Romeo and Juliet, part Terminator, and all adrenaline.
On an island junkyard beneath a sky that glows with radiation, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap. Seventeen-year-old Eve isn’t looking for trouble–she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she spent months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, she’s on the local gangster’s wanted list, and the only thing keeping her grandpa alive is the money she just lost to the bookies. Worst of all, she’s discovered she can somehow destroy machines with the power of her mind, and a bunch of puritanical fanatics are building a coffin her size because of it. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it. The problem is, Eve has had a worse day–one that lingers in her nightmares and the cybernetic implant where her memories used to be. Her discovery of a handsome android named Ezekiel–called a “Lifelike” because they resemble humans–will bring her world crashing down and make her question whether her entire life is a lie. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic sidekick Cricket in tow, Eve will trek across deserts of glass, battle unkillable bots, and infiltrate towering megacities to save the ones she loves…and learn the truth about the bloody secrets of her past.
My Thoughts
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
YOUR BODY IS NOT YOUR OWN.
A robot must obey the orders given to it by the human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law;
YOUR MIND IS NOT YOUR OWN.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second laws.
YOUR LIFE IS NOT YOUR OWN.
Ahhhhhh. Full five nummy yummy doughnuts for this one folks. This was just fizzy. I loved every. single. fizzy. moment.
In the summary it describes this book part Romeo & Juliette, part Terminator, and all adrenaline. I actually don’t agree with that tagline at all. For me this book was mostly Anatstaisa meets Tank Girl, with a little bit Mad Max and mayyyybbbe Terminator. But heavy heavy Tank Girl vibes. If you haven’t seen Tank Girl, then you must if you like kick ass heroines – this has been a PSA.
Eve is a bot fighter living in the outskirts scrap with her best friend Lemon fresh, her Grandpa (or Mr.C), her logika robot Cricket, and her cyborg blitzhund dog Kaiser. Her and Lemon discover a rare LifeLife Humanoid robot in a ship crash and the rest of the story flows from there.
The characters chemistry was amazing, and I had all the feels for everyone especially the Robot Friends, Cricket & Kaiser. The banter was hilarious and I loved the way they spoke to each other.
Cricket patted his spindly hips. “Thiiiiink I left my kraken map in my other pants.”
“I’m supposed to point out you’re not wearing pants now, right?”
Cricket clutched his bobblehead in mock horror. “I’ve been naked this whole time and no one told me?”
But I adored Lemon Fresh the most, her one-liners and charismatic energy really gave the book the extra oomph.
“Riotgrrl!” Lemon pulled back, nose wrinkling. “You look like ten miles of rough road. And you smell like my pits after a hard day’s work.”
“When have you ever put in a hard day’s work, Lem?” Eve grinned.
“I’m too pretty to sweat…”
I loved the storyline and it was a refreshing read. I did have one slight issue with the ending, and I hate when books leave on such an ominous note. But it was like a piece of bait to ensure we pick up the next one. Not that I’m complaining cause it’s obvious I’ll read the second, I just hate that feeling!
I can’t say much without totally giving away spoilers so if you can take away one thing is that this book was highly entertaining and I wholeheartedly recommend it!
“I didn’t think they made sewer rats that big,” Lemon muttered.
“I didn’t think they made anything that big.” Eve nodded.
“I kept waiting for them to stand up and ask if we needed directions.” Lemon shuddered. “I swear, one of them was wearing a waistcoat.”
So something fun for me! I had a hard time not picturing this as a movie – so I started to think of possible movie stars that might star in this movie if it ever came to be…
Saoirse Ronan as Eve: I think she would rock the faux hawk like no body’s business and it’s a must she should keep her accent!
Jane Levy as Lemon Fresh: It maybe biased but the minute they described her as a red head + her personality, I automatically thought of Jane Levy. How cute would she be in goggles and army hat?
Jesse Williams as Ezekiel: ‘Cause this man has to be a robot right? No one can be that pretty? I actually had the hardest time picturing him at first, but if I were to create a perfect android – I think this is pretty darn close.
Taika Waititi as the voice for Cricket: I loved his hilarious character in Thor Ragnorok, Korg. I think his humour and voice is perfect for the sarcastic Logika. I wouldn’t mind him directing the movie either :).
Michael Caine as Grandpa: This is a must. No negotiating.
Okay – gushing over! Hope you were able to navigate through my overexcited review and hopefully you took something away from it. (Either this book is amazeballs, or Maddie should cut back on her caffeine when talking about sci-fis…)
As Always….
HAPPY READING DROOGS!

Aw thanks! Who do you think should play the preacher? I was thinking Dennis Quaid, mainly cause I rewatched Parent Trap last night haha.

you’re welcome 🙂
Maybe Donald Sutherland, I haven’t put so much thought into it but my idea of him is someone evil with white hair, lol
